Although the Videotron contract does not come up for renewal until February 2017, we have begun the analysis of the implications of continuing or not continuing.
Things have
changed considerably in the almost 4 years since the last contract was signed.
1. Technology has changed
2. Competitive products such as Bell
Fibe are more advanced than Videotron’s current offering
3. Streaming services such as Netflix
are now mainstream.
4. Cord cutting is market trend where
people no longer watch “conventional” TV.
As such, we
have calculated the cable component of each condo’s condo fee and compared it
to Videotron’s retail offerings. What we can tell you at this point is that
even the largest condos in our buildings save money compared to retail. Should
we decide to not renew our contract, condo fees will be reduced accordingly.
However, it does not make sense to save $24 per month and then have to pay more
directly to Videotron for less service. It is still a great deal for anyone who
needs a conventional TV subscription. It is a bad deal for someone who never
watches television and would not have a subscription at all.
Also, if we cancel the TV contract, the internet group at Videotron will not be possible. However, there are other options at only a slightly higher cost.

Sometime in
the next 3 months, you will receive a letter from the administration detailing
the implications of the cable contract to your specific condo. We will be
asking you whether you believe we should renew or simply cancel the contract.
We will also ask for suggestions about what is needed to improve the TV or
Internet service if we do renew.
